i think you have to have some kind of stand alone computer to run that trans.

What year is your truck? The later TBI PCM's ('91 - '95) should be able to run a 4L80E, so it's a PCM and wiring harness swap versus tracking down a stand-alone unit.

My trucks an 88, but I have found several stand alone controlers from about $500-$1200. Just dont know which one to get. My 400 is starting to whine when I start the truck, then it will quiet down after about a min or two. If I'm gonna take it out, Its gettin another gear.

Like Busted Knuckles said, a factory setup should be easy enough to adapt. 91-95 are TBI and 4L80E. You'll have a few challenges like some connectors will be different, so the older the setup you get, the more likely it will be an almost-direct swap. 95 will be totally different as that's when they changed to an underhood setup that sort of resembles a Vortec era truck (96-up) although it was still a TBI engine. They moved the electrical convenience center and changed a bunch of crap.

You should be able to boneyard a PCM and harness for a couple hundred or much less if you find it at a self-service yard. Way cheaper and likely far more reliable than an aftermarket controller.
