Just finger tighten the bolts, I put used up 3/32" welding rod ends, minus flux (anything around or less than 1/8") between the block and pan in a half dozen places (just stuck in far enough to keep the pan away from the block, not through the sealer, that would be a leak point). Then do another task, let it set a few hours/days (sealer hardens to be the gasket), pull out the spacers (welding rod stubs), then tighten the bolts. I start at the center, alternating back and forth across the pan, working toward the ends.
