"...I am a taking the car to a shop to get it done...."

if the shop your taking it to does not know what thery ar doing, or what needs to be done, you should not be taking your vehicle there. Z'ing the frame, or raising the crossmember are both very easy, and onlyt ime consuming, menaing lots of labor hours.

z'ing the frame doesnt require alot of modifications to your steering, its simple, many people have done this in their driveway.

raising the crossmember is jsut as easy, if you have the tools to do it.

your asking the questions, which is good, its good to know what needs to be done, but you should be asking the shop that is going to do the work to your truck the same stuff.

if they dont know what they are goign to do, dont take it there.

ask them, then ask us, and see if you get the same answers.

also name dropping, like your first post, is kinda high school stuff. oh well (enter shop name) says you gotta do this, but this other shop says you dont.

every buidler/fabricator will tell you something different. everyshop will do something different.

know and trust the shop you are going to, becuase in the end, its your life, not theirs.

Actually I spoke to the shop first and now trying to confirm it here... Dropping the shops name is because I know that shop isnt a bull sh*t shop, I wanted people to know the credibility of the shop before they commented. I dont know about the code about not naming shop names, or what is considered High school stuff, all I know is I want my truck done and done right. And Had I known this stuff I wouldnt be asking anyone here!

My old 87 is Z'd 2.75 inches and we notched the fire wall a little bit to lay and drag frame on 22s and 24s in the back. The rear notch has room to stuff 26s under them and still have travel. Steve at Section 8 did the work and he has a 79 with 24s all the way around. He didn't have to redo the Z for 24s, but he did needto notch it more. The Zing took us about a couple of hours to do between beers. The steering was fine, we notched the top of the control arm.

Go talk to Porterbuilt, http://www.porterbuiltstreetrods.com/ I have one in my 67 and it's by far the best way to go, all new, engineered parts. designed to lay on 22's. I haven't seen the SD one, but I know the quality of the porterbuilt is worth the money.
