One thing that really helped me was using my other hand that wasnt pulling the trigger. I learned how to weld from my grandpa, the more you do it the better you get. get a bunch of scrap and start welding it together. I used to draw circles but now I do the back and forth C method. But it depends. When I weld over head its always lap-tack or stiching as seth called it. I've got a Miller 135 and a Miller 210. Millers are awesome machines.

how do i determine a good psi to set the regulator at, MIG welding? does it vary by the thickness of the metal, or is there a general setting that most people use all the time?

depends on the thickness of the material on psi ...
and also depend on the welder or the welding person..
for me ... on my 110 lincoln welder , doing sheetmetal with .023 wire , i have the gas between 12-18
on the 220 miller welder , with .035 wire , im usually welding .125 to 0.25" metal so its set between 18-20 , thicker metal , more gas...
on the Miller tig , on sheetmetal using .045 rod i have the gas at 20 .
On thicker metal , up some ....
but this is me... some people do it different...
i tend to watch the puddle , not enough gas , the welds will get poures (sp?) (HOLES) all in it... and other stuff.....

hope that helps some....
ive been welding many years.... and this is just how i do it...
main thing is play with it and learn your machine...

FYI the flow-meter setting is not delivery pressure (PSI) it is flow (CFH).

So it is not 20 PSI but rather 20 CFH.
