I don't what motor is in it but from what I've heard GM did not make even a decent diesel till the 6.5L and even at that it was way behind the competition. I'm no mechanic but thats what some have told me.

I would wait for others to respond but I have heard these are straight junk. One thing you could look into is a industrial 12v Cummins. I have found rebuilt ones for 1k and that is a hell of a motor.

well acording to the wikipedia the 6.2L wasnt introducted intill 1982 so if that the org. motor it must be the 5.7l

"For 1977, a 4-wheel drive full one-ton chassis was added to the lineup and a Dana 60 was used for the front drive axle. 1978 saw the addition of the 125 hp 350 cu in (5.7 L) Oldsmobile diesel V8, as well as an electric oil pressure gauge replacing the mechanical one."

type in "thoughts of 5.7l diesel engine" on google and there is a website called forgotten diesels that explains the pros and cons of every engine out there.

wow that for the website that really help

"Additional 5.7 L Information:

* Though the Olds diesel shares many design similarities with the 350 ci gasoline engine, they are completely different engines. They do not use the same block, and the internals are completely different. Because they share the same bore & stroke as the 350 gasser, people commonly assume the 2 engines share a uniform design.
* The 350 diesel Olds made Popular Hot Rodding's "Worst Automobile Engines of All Time".
* The 5.7 diesel was designed to increase fuel mileage in GM's product line.
* Some drag racers have been known to use 350 diesel blocks as their platform for a 350 ci gasoline engine build, because the blocks are much stronger in high horsepower applications.

Common 5.7 L Olds Diesel Problems:

* Torque to yield (TTY) head bolts provide poor mounting of the cylinder heads. As a result, head gaskets could wear & fail. Head bolts were even know to sheer under the extreme cylinder pressures (the Olds diesel had a very high compression ratio, which didn't help).
* The fuel system lacks a fuel-water seperator. Any water that enters the injection pump can cause parts to corrode & fail. This can result in extensive engine damage.
* Main bolts were too short, often resulting in bottom end failure & crankshaft damage. ""

i was reading on the 6.2 didnt say much just its a NA diesel to replace the 5.7 "The naturally aspirated 6.2 was no powerhouse"

so im guess that since i want to be able to pull my minitruck (on a trailer of course) a diesel form this gen of dually would not be a good choice so i might want to consider the one with the 454???
