we built mine on the floor using wood blocks, but if i ever do another, it will definitely be built on a table. after seeing my buddy's table and how much easier it can make things, i will definitely try to build a table first next time around

i have a table built out of 6x6 H beam at my house, but now i use one of the tables at work, made of 1" plate..... i'd say the flat table is alot better, but unless you want to spend 2-3 grand on a slab of steel, you'd need to build a good square and level table with lots of xmembers if you are going to cover one with thinner plate, and use nice new steel like i beam, h beam, or big square or rectangular tubing to build a table..... dont use angle iron, it is never straight....

and thats really overbuilt with the H-beams as well. you could easily use 2x3 or similar.

I wouldn't use 2x3, something bigger really. 2x3 has a light crown to it.

I was going to use some 4x4 3/8" wall thats just lying around, but I have no way to really cut it.

I agree to an extent but I would use a 2x4 or 3x4 instead
