Would I do 10-20 mins of welding to the bottom of that truck? yes. Would I be able to sleep under it? probably not.

We use thoes straps at work to move heavy azz CNC machines around. We have had a Morie Seki that weighs about 4,000 lbs hanging off a crane for nearly a week with one on it. Still though, I don't trust that Nylon for shiznit and they don't use nylon to remove thoes die blocks from the extrusion presses either (about 4 tons). I have seen one rip open before on smaller loads and if one does go there isn't any warning, it's just "Rip" and then the load is going down. Just my 2 pennies.

ahh the constant struggle between the physical world and what people think.
First, a strap that size would hold up a forklift. A two inch strap is rated at 5 tons, and that is at least a 4, maybe a 5".
Second, straps get stronger in tension, by the nature of the weave distributing the load. I think a 5 inch strap would be stronger than a 3 inch hook on an engine crane. Because they are woven and not a solid material, even if you tear halfway through it the tear would not rip the rest of the way across, unless the weight on the strap exceeded the amount the untorn width could handle. Which even at a 1/4" remaining should still support the couple hundred pounds he is lifting.
I would work under that, sleep under that and raise my kids under that. There is barely any weight on the strap because the rear wheels are still on the ground, there is an angular component of force still pushing down on the rear wheels and lifting the front makes that force stronger, meaning the higher he lifts the front, the more weight is distributed to the rear wheels, not to the strap. Think of a wheelbarrow, it gets lighter the higher you lift it.
So to answer your question, no that doesnt look unsafe. It does look unconventional, but that hoist could hold the whole truck, so could the strap. In a perfect world he would at least put some stands under the frame, but that is a crapload safer than working with a jack.

good point Russ> i agree.the front of that truck with no motor 2 guys could lift it,maybe not press it but could pick it up none the less. i will say this it beats laying on your skull and welding. that is if you dont have a liftof course

not sure i agree with you on that russ i do alot of lifting with these things and we get the slightest tear and ours are replaced but then again were not lifting trucks

rusty has 3 vietnamese children that live under a truck in his backyard, and the entire truck is hoisted with a single 4" strap..........
