well at least you admit you were wrong, thats an admirable quality to have and its hard to do on your own. I wasnt trying to beat you up about it but I knew what would tuck, and not from calculating it on paper but from driving mazdas the last 10 years. When you said 4.5 I said whoa, not a chance.

one more question I guess... is there a difference between FWD and RWD offsets? I'm looking at 17x7s with +40 and its saying thats a FWD offset.

fwd/rwd is just a general description, you dont have to use it on a fwd car.

so a 17x7 will have no problems turning or tucking with a +40 offset and slam re 6's? This couldn't be much more confusing.

+40 is only about 7mm more than you need, about a 1/4 inch
so no, it will tuck and turn just fine.
You must be redrilled to 5 lug, because I have never seen a +40 17x7 with 6 lug pattern lol.

oh I see why, I never explained changing backspace to offset.
If you need offset and know backspace
add an inch to the whee width (7+1=8 )
divide by 2 (8/2=4)
subtract that result from the backspace (5.25-4=1.25)
multiply that result by 25.4 (1.25 *25.4=31.75 or lets say 32)
that means a wheel with 5.25 inches backspace will have 32 mm offset. Since offset is measured from the center line of the wheel and backspace is measure from the rear of the wheel, all you have to do is subtract half the wheel width and convert to mm.
If you need offset and know backspace

I know, I'm in the process of setting up the Can Do arms with Toyota spindle swap, and there is a ton of +40 for a 5x114.3. Steve set them up so the hub is the same distance from the frame as the stock hub, unlike switching to 5 bolt hubs with the mazda stuff. I'm glad I'm going this way instead of trying for a year to get 6 bolt and then switching.
