Today I saw the sweetest truck ever, an early 90's Nissan Hardbody Crewcab with Japanese bed. Then I thought, why does everyone complain about shipping for Japan or Austraila when those were sold in Mexico? North America was the only market that didn't get crewcabs, and sure enough, this one had Mexican plates on it. So try looking into that, especially guys in California, it is a cheaper alternative.
i dont think its the shipping thats the problem. i think its something to do with getting it to pass u.s standards or something
thats what my brother and i are plannig to do get a hardbody crew cab with the 720 body style. or a chevy luv crew cab.
anyone know a good place to located them. websites or something. I am in TN so I cant just go donw there and look for one.
what kind of truck r u looking for u can try and google them i found some the other day.
i am looking for an just a 4 door mini. Something that you dont see everyday here.
its not the shipping, federalizing them for use in the US has to be done by a RI (registered importer) and costs about 10k.
And if you think you can just sneak one in or just sneak a cab in and do a vin swap, know this: when a local cop who happens to know they didnt offer that body here pulls you over and does a vin check, your truck will be crushed and you will go to jail. Even if you DONT get caught, 5 owners later it will all trace back to you and you will STILL go to jail.
No you cant just drive your new truck across the US/Mexico border. No you can't get Mexican plates and drive it in the US if you dont live there. No you can't import it as parts and reassemble it.
I have been upside down on this 500 times trying to import an italian 320is, I even owned a euro BMW, there are no shortcuts.
we tend to call them dual cabs in australia so if your doing a google search that might help as well.

Killjoy.
I know several have been down this road before, but what about registering it as a "special construction" vehicle or something along those lines? I know a TCI Model A frame and a Brookfield A body don't come with VINs, but you can get those reg'd...Come on, with all of the scofflaws on this site SOMEBODY has to know a way to get around DMV!!

Only shortcut as far as bringing any car to the U.S.and getting it through customs without toomuchof a hastle is getting any vehicle over 25 years old....that would mean a 82 or older for you mathmeticians out there. It can be considered antique or collectors item....no adding to emissions, no changin glass etc.
