water traps are correctly installed between the tank and the valves. You can put it between the compressor and the tank, but you will only catch a small percentage of the water. Compressed air is hot and it cools as it expands, the water trap volume is very small and the compressed air wont expand much there, the greatest expansion happens in the big volume of the air tank. You can run two, one after the compressor and another after the tank, but the one after the compressor still would not keep water out of your tank and therefore your valves. Look at home compressors, the water trap is on the outlet of the tank.

Water in the tank is inevitable because of the large volume and rapid cooling of the compressed air. If you dont want the tank to rust, get a stainless one.

so russ, you're saying i need 8 water traps? 2 b/w compressors and tanks, and 4 between tanks and valves?

if you are running a 4 port tank, with a seperate line to each valve, then you will need at least 4 to keep water out of your valves.

I was only being amusing suggesting putting one after the compressors.

Unfortunately, if you are running a single port to each valve, then you will need 4. Having a water trap between the compressor and tank will only catch a percentage of the water, not eliminate it.
