engine compressor NEED HELP ASAP

I got a york air compressor and it is brand new I replaced my old one because I thought it was messed up. I put the new one on and the same thing is happening. When it is not engauged the clutch spends freely, but when it is engauged the whole clutch stops. What could be causing this, is the clutch just bad, when I told the one one off the clutch seemed fine.
