Ok guys I picked up a sweet deal on a 73 HiLux. I wanted something different to build and I got it. It's got factory automatic and factory AC which I figure has to be really rare for a 73. Body's in really good shape, just a couple spots of surface rust around the tail bezel. Anyway the timing chain broke so I went and ordered all my parts to put it on the road. Anyway has anybody bagged them using the factory front clip? I know LoLux was on an RN80 frame.. What size cups do I need? Can I flip these ball joints? How easy would it be to upgrade to late-model disc brakes up front? Yeah.. lotsa questions.. I'm psyched to do this thing nice.
it has been done yes, if you can find the March 03 issue of StreetTrucks on page 128 they bagged one, you have to cut some stuff off and make a new upper A arm mount
Does anybody sell chrome grilles and bumpers for these, or am I stuck with restoring what's on it? Does anybody have a rollpan, or do I have to fab one up? Can you flip the ball joints w/o any reprecussions?
good luck on findign a new chrome grill, let me know if you find a place selling them, this is about the best I have found for bumpers or anything HiLuxparts , never bought from them so might wanna ask about Parts Train, but at least its a start, its a fuckin pain in the ass to find anything decent for these trucks, especially since the name HiLux is still used in Japan and Australia
oh and grant fab has some stuff for the HiLux, so check his struff out too
Dude no kidding about the parts. Now I know why Jerry did the 22RE and frame swap. It's unreal, I spent 4 hours on Google looking for a damn oil pump.
Dude.. Thank you. I see myself having to swap motors at some point, I have an 18RC. I'd never even heard of this motor before I bought this thing... I work too much, so I'm having to pay to have the timing chain done.. I bought all my shit at overnight auto parts.. Just google that, the shipping wasn't bad and it was reasonably cheap...
I don't remember where I saw it, but you can get aftermarket chrome grilles. try searching for RN20 body parts on google. Also, you can use the disc brakes from a 77 or 78 hilux and they will bolt right on.
