just out of curiosity how much do you guys think a dealer would give me for my truck. I'd like to buy a new shortbed single cab colorado. I went to chevrolet.com and built my own and it came out to be $16,060. Do they look at custom work or go only by the blue book price? I have about $7,000+ in it not including the price of the truck. Oh and this isn't me advertising to sell my truck i am just curious about how dealerships operate because i've never dealt with them before

They are going to give you blue book and blue book only, if you are lucky. They might even give you less because of the customization. Even though it adds value to us customizing(a lot of the time) will decrease the value.

A dealer looks at Blue Book pricing along with something else called "Fair Market Value" which means what they could buy the vehicle at auction for.

(An example of fair market value)A few years back Mitsubishi did their "no payments for a year" and in Southern California people went out and bought Galants and Monteros espically and did not pay on them for a year, so when their first payments were due they owed the full purchase price with very high payments being their loan was missing a year, so alot of people got rid of them and traded them in on new vehicles and just absorbed the difference into their new vehicle and stretched the terms. What this did, was flood the market with these vehicles and made it so used car dealerships could find them every where which in turn drove the "market value" on the vehicle way down.

The reason these things are important is statistically their is a percentage of car buyers who are in the market for a small pick up like yours, when you modify your truck you have now taken that number or people and made an even smaller percentage of people looking for a "modified" little truck. Therefore, with a smaller ranger of pontential buyers, the difficulty of reselling it becomes higher. Even though a dealer can get more money for the mods, they make their money turn vehicles, not sitting on a unit for along time. (I know I use to work in Automotive Sales)

I hope that helps you out. My suggestion sell your truck on Modified, or the classifieds or to a private party.

Keep in mind that their goal is to make money out of it. So they will give you less than they think it is worth. That way they have room for maintenance and profit when they sell it.

You better give it to me...at least I'd take care of it

Good luck, but honnestly the minitruck market seems pretty low in the US...I saw a bd'd 99 s-10 for around 7-8 with rims and airbags all around....over here only the truck stock would worth around 8...if you add bodydrop, rims, airbags....you can have more over 10-12 for the 99.

I hope you'll at least get something you think it may worth.

Good luck

You also need to realize that the dealership could try to charge 10 grand(just throwing out a number). The problem is that banks wont give anymore than say 5 grand. So now you have to find someone willing to fork over cash on something that that market-wise is only worth 5.

yea matt forget that colorado you have a very clean looking dime, i would just make it lay and mabey even a sfbd in the future and it will be nuts. You will only loose money if you trade it in or sell it. just keep it and keep working on it because its looking really good.

Whenever you customize anything, you will never get your money back. It may look nice and people might really like the looks of it, but no one wants to step up and pay for what you have done.
I have been building & buying/selling custom rides for 10 years. You never want to trade something in, because they cannot give you anywhere close to what you have in it. Honestly, you would belucky to half of what is done. The used car market is really messed up right now and you would be lucky to get top book value with all your custom add on's. Because if someone goes to the bank to get a loan, they can only borrow up to full retail.
Good Luck,
P.J.

Park it in front of a high school in a nice area with the price you think is fair. You're more likely to get the money from there than from the dealer.
