custom door panels

i am working on my door panels redoing them w/ tweed and i am wanting to put a tribal design on them i have been doing some looking and saw that a lot of people use closed cell foam to build up their desings on door panels, my question how thick of foam should i use or is there anything else that would work better for what i am trying to do????
