purging the tank isnt necessary, just weld the beast up and then use a gastank sealer from eastwood.com to seal the tank.

Or back purge it so you don't get porous welds and leaks and then get it electroless nickel plated. Hey Chris, you heard about the planes falling out of the sky recently? Alot of planes use sealers and when gasohol started getting added to the fuel it dissolved and peeled the sealers, clogging the fuel filters. Hirsch Auto has one that seems to be a little better but I don't trust that shit.

or just cut it with a sawzall and drench the blade with oil and while its seperated clean it with some heavy duty degreaser and then onceits all clean you can weld it back up.

Or you can drop a match in it to see if it would blow.

dont take it to a radiator shop if you plan on welding it yourself. they can do the whole job if you like but dont have it boiled out. that removes all the galvanizing inside and out and then it will rust.

butif they have a steam cleaner for gas tanks thats the best. I worked at a radiator shop for more than 14 years, and did hundreds of gas tank repairs.

soap and water wolrks ok if you use alot of dish soap and do it several times. put in a few gallons of water and slosh it around alot, then rinse and repeat till you smell no fumes. but remember even if its clean and you close all the holes up, and leave it for a day or so, when you come back it will have fumes again as the galvanization will hold fumes.
if you can find a number for Therm Processes in Dallas they sell the tank sealer.

i rinsed my gas tank out and started welding on it about 1 hour later, i just let the hose run in it for about 5 min after pouring out the old gas.
