fuel cell stock sending unit help

i drive a 2000 ranger and i have a 15 gallon fuel cell. i am in the process of redoing everything and i was wondering about my gas stuff. i am using the stock sending unit in the fuel cell and it has a plug and three lines coming out of it. one of the lines goes to the carbon canister.. i already ousted that. the other two go to a fuel filter... but coming out the other side of the fuel filter is only one line running something else then one line out tht to the engine. my question is... those two lines going to the fuel filter.. is there a way to get rid of one of those gas line or do i need them both?is onr a fuel send then the other is fuel return? i think my old trucks fule filter only had one line going to it and one going out. i am trying to get rid of as much as possible to have space to run stuff so this was the next item on the list. thanks
