Independan rear end Gear Ratio

I just finished my IRS on my extended cab s-10 and the grear ratio on the 87 non turbo rx7 rear end is freekin low its like a 20mph diff. any body got any suggestions hit me up... Do you think goin from 16's to 22's will change the ratio that much?
