What are alternators made out of?

Just wondering what kind of metal the outer shell of an alternator is made from. Cause mine was pretty gross looking so I cleaned it up with a wire wheel and now its all shinny. Just wondering if it aluminum so I can leave it like that or is it gonna rust?
