Can you safely section 2" from c10 crossmember?

I have an 87 c10 long bed... yup.. long bed anyways... the suspension is mainly done... im lacking drop spindles but it has full air ride and 8valves etc.. but I want to get the bumper the closest to the ground as possible without a full body drop.. so i've heard of z'ing and sectioning the cross member.. etc..

Well I know where an article is to section the crossmember and have an extra one to try it on but.. can I safely take out a full 2" and not worry about it not being strong enough? Thanks guys.. I have a 305 in mine if that makes a difference.
