ground wire= runs better?

if my ground wire isnt hooked up from the engine to the body...that would cause my mazda to run like poop..wouldnt it?it acts like a really bad vaccum leak but there is no vaccum leak..it just runs rough at idle and has very little power..i think it was there for a reason. what yall think.
