lowering a closed driveshaft ride

i have a '51 chevy 2 door coupe that im working on it has the closed drive shaft/rear end and i was wanting to know if anybody has lowered one with this just using steel if so do you just do it like a normal open drive vehicle or what, and how much can you drop one without fucking the drive train up? any info would help
