raising s-10 gas tank?

how do i go about doing this. from what i can tell just from looking at it im guessing i have to notch the gas tank crossmember. what do i do with the metal strap around the tank. do i just cut it and reweld it back together to make it shorter? im just wondering what other people have done. any help is appreciated
