blowing smoke...running rich??

Finally got her running, but she still starts kinda hard, and I have to feather the gas pedal for a bit to get it going, and now its blowing black smoke, seems like its running rich, and I did notice that when I'd pull a spark plug, it would have gas on it...now what would cause it to run rich? pump pumping too fast?
