Air Cylinders or Air Struts

Ladies and Gents I am having a brain fart, this afternoon. So this might be a stupid question to you. Front wheel drive vehicles, Toyota's,Ford's,Chevy's...etc. that have the strut tower. When putting and air system on them, can you put all air cylinders on them or do you have to mix and match them. I mean air struts are expensive and the Air cylinders are way cheaper. Tell me what you think.
