Rear anti-sway bar purpose?

What's the purpose of a anti-sway bar on an SUV? Does it improve ride quality? Handling? Safety?

I had to remove mine because I put air cylinders back there and it will not mount anymore.

I am just wondering if it will be a safety issue...
