question about flipping balljoints

Im trying to flip my balljoints, but not sure what exactly to do. I thought I was supposed to mount it facing upward instead of down, but I noticed that the balljoint shaft (where the nut and cotter pin goes) is tapered and wont fit like that. Do i just keep it facing down, but bolt it on top of the lower A arm?
