S-10/S-15 GASTANK PIPE ?

i just shaved off the gasdoor on my truck and relocated the pipe inside of the bed,i cut a hole for now but my ? @ the end of the pipe theres a lil ball inside of it i was going to cut the top off and thats the only part i was going to use, do i really need that ball ? whats it foor?
