im looking to put a new rear end in my 86 d50 or just rebuild my existing one. is anyone running with a posi or lsd? i dont know what i should go with. im not makingalot of power but i would like that extra traction. what are the stock gears in these trucks?
thanks guys!
i was running a single spinner in my 4g63t 83l200 and had bugger all traction, i changed to a lsd andgot heaps more traction but it steps out in the bum alot more where the single spinner would just spin up and keep going streight, i was running a 4.6:1 lsd but it was to tall and could only get 100mph on the 1/4mile, i have since changed to a 3.9:1 lsd, i havnt tryed it down the strip but is better up top, i think a 4.3:1 would be best.
Your gearing could be anything youl have to count it, theres abit of an art to setting up a diff head properly so unless yourv got the right tools i wouldnt recomend it, hope this helps
this helps alot. thanks man. okay now my next question is what kind of lsd should i get? should i pull my old gears out and re-gear it with an lsd in it or buy an axel already set up for it? if i should redo mine is the an lsd that is better then others for the price or is it just get what you can?
the factory lsd can handel quite alot of beating, prob be ezer to find a lsd diff but you can change the crown wheel and pinion to get the gearing you want, i put the crown wheel and pinion from a single spinner onto a lsd unit, i went to the local mitsubish dealer to get the info to rebuild mine, if you cant find anything i might be able to scan what i have and send it to you
thanks but that still kinda leaves my question open. okay so to clarify things. i have a stock diff(single spinner) i wanna throw a lsd in it. what should i get? rebuild stock diff with a lsd? or buy a random lsd diff?
thanks for all your help guys
the ezyst way to go is buying a diff thats already lsd but if it isnt the ratio that you want you can change it
okay, thank you. what would you recomend for a diff?
If you can find a first gen Montero or Raider, some will have the LSD in them and will fit in our trucks.
Look for an orange sticker on the drivers door post,
or a yellow sticker (same place, it will say use limited slip lube)
There also could be a yellow sticker on the back of the pumpkin saying the same.
The year goes up to 88
(NOTE: the V6 limited slips will not work on the first gen trucks )
ONLY FOR THE 4 BANGER
If I remember correctly, You'll need 12mm, 14mm wrench, and a hammer (Take more tools of course). I pulled one in 45 minutes, that is walking in @ u-pull it and back out the door. (the last one I bought cost $59.00, In Oregon of course)
If your gears are in good shape? You can use them. The montero and raider have 4:63 and higher
The 2wd trucks either have 3:54 (manual trans) or 3:90 auto
The 4 wd truck (manual trans) 3:90, Yeah, there IS a automatic 4wd truck....RARE!!
YES these read ends are TOUGH, I narrowed a 95 Ford explorer 8.8" rear end for my truck. Ford rates these axles at 3500 lbs. The Mighty Max/Ram 50 axles are 1/16" smaller than the Fords.
The Mighty max/ram 50 is 7-1/4"(ring gear) It looks small, But it is very BEEFY!!
I hope this help you out some, now try to find and Montero or Raider
Out here in the great northwest there are MANY, east is a different story...
This is a 88 Dodge Raider chunk

Oh, they will ALSO fit 2nd gen trucks.
same rule, both must have 4 cylinder engines
V6 is for V6
ok Ive read everything here...and I dont pretend to understand rear end gearing.. I also want a posi unit. I need gears that will work for highway and intown use. I have a 87 50 with a 2.6 and manual trans. What do I need to look for? And/Or does any one have one for sale?
