Well here's the verdict on my problem. It turns out that the crank keyway is shot, so the crank pulley was throwing the timing off. Now what? pull the crank and get it machined? or just find a new/used crank? Thanks for all your help you guys, at least i figured out what it wasn't and went from there.

If an impact gun wasn't used to tighten the lower pulley that is probably what took out the crank snout. It's probably easier to buy a re-machined crank at this point because it will come with the bearings matched to the crank. The lower pulley is supposed to be tightened to something like 180 ft-lbs I think.

116-123 ft-lbs

I think the original source for the confusion for some is from Mazda itself. Here's page B1-10 from the electronic Mazda service manual for 1992, what it actually shows in the lower left is the small bolts that take a 10mm socket which get torqued to 9-13 ft-lbs, not the large bolt that requires a 21mm socket, but it's tough to tell that from this diagram.

This is page B1-60 from the same service manual, shows both, with the large bolt at the lower right. This shows not only that small bolt in the lower left at 9-13 ft-lbs, but in the lower right shows the large center bolt at 116-123 ft-lbs. But it's not super evident from the size of the bolts and the orientation which is which.

So I can understand where the initial confusion came from. But any mechanic worth beans would/should know that large bolts need way more torque than 9-13 ft-lbs !!!

Sorry the site no longer recognizes IMG codes used by most boards, you may need to click or copy/paste to see those. You fight with Baha.
