I have an 89 b2200 with automatic transmission and stock carb. My engine runs so rough, and going up any hills is a joke. When I step on the gas the engine sputters a tiny bit and shakes, not to mention that it Boggs and only when I up shift it will unbogg. Does anybody have any suggestions on what might fix my dilemma. Straight flat road it runs no problem but as soon as I hit an incline it's over!! I down shift and its all good for a bit but as soon as I press on the gas It seems like the engine will blow up!! Pls help
Thanks

What have you checked so far???

Fouled plugs? Pull and check them.
Burned head gasket? Run a compression test.

Hey ya I just pulled the plugs,,the threads were pretty black,, and above the last thread was pretty burnt!!! They were all like that. I just took a torch to clean them and I will try them tmrw morning. I will do a compression test too!!!

My b2600 was idling like shit, I think it had something to do with the mass air flow sensor/meter, because I replaced the alternator, plugs, and a few other things and it ran even worse until I tapped on the meter. Then everything came back to normal. When you change a battery on these, I believe the ecu has to relearn as well. They're sensitive weird little trucks, never had any issues like that out of S-10s and other minis.

Are the '89s fuel injected with all the typical emissions stuff? If it's carbureted, please dismiss this. But otherwise if you have a MAF, get that spray by CRC called "Mair Air Flow Sensor Cleaner" and follow the instructions really good on it. It doesn't take much to get one in proper order again.

I swear by the CRC MAF cleaner. Any new car needs the MAF cleaned every other oil change. It's the first sensor the ECU reads, like dominos everything after that falls apart if the MAF isn't right.

No MAF on a carbureted engine.

Ah, figured an '89 might still be a carbureted. Having no MAF and less sensors in general is about the only thing I like about carburetion, heh. The only carbureted vehicle I have right now is a 1980 Celica, which has definitely bit me in the ass as much as the Mazda. The carb (20-r) had a fuel cut off switch that was acting up and the car idled much like bushrat's 2200, very erratic and hesitating. Not sure how the carbs on the Mazda are made, but definitely inspect every aspect of it.

Just a good tune up as a start.New plugs, wires, rotor cap/button and pcv valve fuel filter.I would suggest cleaning 2 items the egr and carb. The egr is mounted below the carb with 3 ten mm bolts,1 vac line,1 electrical plug.Remove and use carb cleaner and toothbrush to remove the carbon buildup.I would at least do this as a start and then consider removing the pre-cat convertor bolted to the exhaust manifold and cleaning out and replacing the cat convertor itself if untouched based on age/mileage.Just some simple starter items and not too expensive aside the cat.If you have any air restriction like the charge air pipe filters on the air cleaner or exhaust this kills the power period.
