Is it possible to only replace the inner wheel seal on the rear axle without damaging the outer seal?
Also, am I correct to assume that the wheel bearing has to be pressed off of the axle shaft to replace the outer wheel seal?
Yes you can remove the axle shaft and just do seal inside the axle housing. This seal is most prone to leak as the backing plate proves this on most b trucks I have seen in the junkyards.Ironically I do believe the seal in the housing is considered the outer seal (idk why) but, just remove and double check either here OR " target="_blank first forum has parts list stickied for that seal you need.Axle will pull straight out,and I did not need a puller to remove.Take seal with you if unsure to store.Since the inner/outer maybe diff.Hope this helps and not sure if mt has that listed on parts,so many post going on recall.
