Will removing catalytic converter make better mpg?

I'm planning on replacing the converter with a pipe , will that improve mpg and or performance ? 88 Mazda b2200

Or just gut them out by pounding the matrix out with a large pipe and sledge hammer?

Will it help? Only if the current cats are clogged.

It help mine by removing just the secondary cat. Then when I installed my header this removing the primary cat as well. It helped only slightly more.
