Alternator Suggestions...

ive got an 89 b2200, ive got a 1000 watt massive amp running 2 mtx 12's and 1 infinity 12. ive done a voltage test on my battery and not running its got 11.9, running its got 12.5, so im assuming my alternator is hooped. what alternator should i get? will stock be good enough and then go from there to decide on a deep cycle battery or should i try and find one with more amperage? the only thing is i would like it to be a direct bolt in cuz i dont wanna start modifying anything just yet. thanks

Im not to sure if they make higher amp stock alternators off the shelf for our trucks, I do know you can get one custom wound to higher amp though. I know you dont want to modify, but I put a 100 amp One Wire GM alt on mine, it was super easy swap. Just giving you some options. Also I think you can swap some Ford alt but I dont know the details of that swap. Heres a couple pics of mine before the engine was installed.

is 55 amps stock cuz ive been seeing 42, 55, 85... which is correct?

First don't run a deep cycle battery, they are meant to be drawn down almost dead and then fully recharged. They do not last when you use them as a regular battery. Some of the hybrid ones might be alright but not a regular deep cycle.

I've fought with high amp alternators over the years and they never lasted for me. I talked to a place here that rebuilds them about it for a long while. What they told me is that basically for the size the factory is getting just about as much out of them as they can. The casings just can't get rid of the heat and they burn themselves up.

My next one is going to be a huge truck alternator, like 200 amps.

Fitting something different on your truck should be a piece of cake.

There are a few companies that make aftermarket alts for our trucks but they are VERY exspensive. Around 400-500. The gm 1 wire is a very good inexspesive option. And our oem ones are 55 amp.

When it comes to electric systems...you have to upgrade all the components for it to run smoothly. I would invest in a good agm battery..(xs power,kinetik,optima,etc) and I would also all power and ground wires possible. That will make a huge difference

thanks for the advice... so a 100 amp 1 wire gm alt would be a good way to go? and does it just bolt right in or do i have to go smaller?

Here is mine and i think it is a good idea... but i got the idea from this site... i have a couple amps 2 optima yellow tops and 2 compressors and havent had a problem

I've never had a problem with mine, and I have over 25,000 miles on it. Its kinda bolt on, you need a 5/16 thread bolt about 1 inch long for the bottom, and the top is a 3/8 thread bolt around 3 1/2 (I cant remember the length). As for the belt it took me a couple trips to the parts store to get it right. If you need to I can get the number off my belt.
