Cleaning up engine bay..need help..Got pics

I'm remounting all wires on the inner fenders else where. My question is on the coil that goes to my distributer cap theres this "power unit". For a cleaner look i want to mount it elsewhere. but when i took it off, i noticed it seemed to have this clear gel under it"electrolide stuff?" for a better contact? and its bar metal under it. Does this all have to stay together as one unit or can i separate it?
