What's the best stuff to use to get all this old caked on oil and everything off of my engine parts so I can paint them with dignity?

Also, What're the best prep methods for painting engine parts?

At the shop we use this stuff called purple power, you can pick it up at most parts stores, works extremely well.

For painting engine parts, you want to use some high temp paint. Just make sure that the area you want to paint is extremely dry. I would suggest spraying carb cleaner on a rag and wiping down the area you want to paint.

Dremel with a wire wheel is easier.BJ

sanding on baked on oil will just clog up your sandpaper real quick. like hojbj said, wire wheel on a dremel or on a drill will take it right off.

Simple green does good work at taking grease off.
