My 86 is a 2.0 Mazda engine, the ps should have one bolt to loosen to slack the belt for removal, you might have to loosen the ps pivot bolts also.

Ok now I'm stumped... tightening the adjustment bolt for the pulley will make it tighter, but I can't get it to loosen at all. Did have the belt loosened some but I tightened it again and now it won't loosen. I've tried it leaving the bolt in the center on and removing it but it doesn't seem to make a difference. There is a long slot in the bracket where the pulley should slide but it's not sliding down, should I hit it with a rubber mallet? This happened to anyone before?

Nevermind, got it off! Just had to hit it with a mallet to get it to budge.
