All of the most likely culprits have been mentioned. However, there is always the chance of deteriorating water pump to. So after your flush and thermostat, if you still run hot on the highway, then it's probably down to a radiator or water pump.

Is your radiator plastic tank or all metal? How old does it look? While you've got it apart, you might run it by a radiator shop and have them flow test it.

Jiffy - were you able to solve the overheating issue?

I found my problem... Or one of them. This is a cracking in the top of the radiator in front of the top hose... There's more cracks underneath. Filled it with water and let it idle and watched... Saw little leaks from the radiator EVERY WE'RE!

There's no Water in the oil so that was exciting and no obvious leaks anywhere else so hopefully it's just a new radiator I need

Actually: I think that's "good" news, much better news than a bad cylinder head or head gasket.

Be aware: if you get the #433140 Murray all-aluminum 2-row radiator from O'Reillys (2-row was designated for the automatics, for some reason), you may have to drill 4 holes in it to mount the plastic radiator shroud, I did (see my rebuild thread in signature link for photos). I do recommend this radiator though, cools very well.

But others who have bought this 2-row radiator recently report that it fit the shroud perfectly, so maybe they have modified it since Dan W. and I purchased ours 1.5 years ago.

That's where I ordered it from... They said it was the only one so I'm guessing it's that one you mentioned. It is good news because the motor runs awesome (low idle but I'll work on that later... Gona get a weber eventually anyway) didn't want to rebuild it right now, looking around for the Kia parts to do the swap eventually anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys, going to replace everything... New water pump, radiator, thermostat, hoses n all... Was told "if your going to do something, do it right the first time"lol i just tend to go a little overkill

you might also just have air bubbles in the cooling system. to fix this pull up on a curb if your ride can get that high. just the front two wheels. set parking break and let idle. pull radiator cap off and see if bubbles come up. pinch the hose and let go the bottom hose.. repeat this til no bubbles show... (over heating= bad head gasket, cracks in head, holes in cooling hoses, clogged or bad radiator, bad water pump, bad radiator cap also timing could cause over heating also)

Well, if you're going to do the water pump, put on a new timing belt (I use Gates), since that has to come off anyway to do a water pump.

Hints for water pump/timing belt R&R:
Remember to turn the engine to TDC #1 when doing this job

You do NOT remove the big crankshaft bolt which requires a 21mm socket - there are six little bolts that hold the crankshaft pulley on, 10mm socket.

There's a good tutorial with photos for this at

Awesome, I'll definitely do it to. Might as well do everything while I'm there
