Distributor

What is the little black box looking thing that mounts onto the distributor and has one single black wire going to the coil? What does it do? The wire coming out of mine is frail and about ready to fall off.

I heard it was for radio noise supression is that true?

im not sure mine fell off and it still ran fine...but i did hook it back up
