Hey Justin I have never been in the military either...almost joined the MO National Guard but not enough money. Anyways I copied your post and emailed it to a budy of mine. He is pretty much my brother. He was a Marine reservist for a few years. I will post up his response.
Here you go...from my friend Boley....
"Hey not sure how much this will help him but here is a short bit. Well I served about 6 years ago in the Marine Corp Reserve. I was in for about 2 1/2 years before being discharged due to having a messed up back. I was part of C.A.T.T. (combined anti-tank team) I either drove are rode around in a humvee & shot a .50 cal machine at tanks to piss them off so another humvee could shoot a rocket at the tank & kill it. I loved all the shooting. From 9mm to M16 to the S.A.W. to the .50 cal to the MK19 (fully automatic grenade launcher). My M.O.S. was 0331 heavy machine gunner. Another I liked was the brotherhood. When you talk to other Marines you already know a great deal of what they have done in their life because you did the same thing. Generally speaking the the pay is not real great. But if you are single & don't have any bills it is not bad. In most ways it is like any other job. There are going to be things you like & things you hate. Some of the crap I hated was the stupid games. You have to remember that it is not as as easy in the military to go f*** himself & get away with it. So sometimes the higher ranks would give you crap jobs just because you are lower in rank & they can, even if the job really doesn't have to be done or you don
all good information. keep em coming.

I was in the military a long time ago.Pay then was not so hot,but has improved a great deal in the last few years. If u get into a really good outfit ( I was in the 82nd Airborne Division) u get a lot of good training. The comradeship is something u will never forget. U learn to live, sleep, eat, fight and even die as a team.Since most civilian organizations like team players, those lessons are invaluable. I was exposed to a lot of different people, places, cultures and information I would never have seen if I wasnt in the military. I was a 21 year old college educated dumb a-- who grew up real quick in jump school. If u know ur life depends on how well u and some other dumb a-- do their jobs,it makes a grown up out of u real fast.U also learn that u can do a lot of things physically and mentally u didnt know u could do--like make good decisions when u havent slept in 48 hours -- or like march all night in total darkness with only a compass and the stars and end up within 100 yards of where u needed to go.U also develop an extreme sense of pride and confidence in yourself that carries over to everything else u do.No mental and physical slobs last very long in the military. Like I said earlier,I was in a long time ago,but most all those experiences still are with me today and I still use most of them every day..Hope this helps.BJ
