HELP! new thermostat -> still no heat

My heater started blowing cold one night when I was driving my dawg to Salisbury (about 25 miles from Ocean City). It was frigid cold (15 F) and not much fun. when I got the the 'bury I popped the hood and my coolant was bone dry, yet engine ran cold the whole trip. (i had full coolant a week prior, and I have no leaks). I filled it, up still no heat. I assumed the thermostat was shot so I changed it today. heater now blows barely lukewarm at best, and it was 50 out today.

That tells me the thermostat was not the problem. I havent burned off coolant like that again. I'm totally stumped. any ideas?

have you felt both radi hoses and both heater core hoses. . both heater core hoses should be hot and the lower radiator hose should be hot and the upper a lil less warm. . your heater core may be clogged up. . if one heater hose is hot and the other isnt, thats your problem. . . OR you may have gotten an air pocket in your system from runnin the coolant down. . sometimes that will cause heat to not work. . But check your heater hoses first. . if thats your problem, you need to backflush just the heater core. . it'd work better if you did just that. . rather than the whole system. . I'd do the whole system as well but do the core by itself to maximize the pressure put on it and push all that crap out. . .

or it could be that mazdas dont heat up for shit and their heaters are only decent to say the most. im in PHX AZ and it gets 120 here. my heater barely works ok in the middle of the summer. idk why they disperse heat so well.... a little too well if you ask me

On my b3000 I had the same problem, It was my blend door. I'm nut sure if the 88-93's have the blend door like my 01 had. If the heater core hoses are hot, Then might be the blend door????? Just a suggestion.

did u put the correct thermo in?Mazs work best with a 2 stage 160/180 thermo and the small pin hole for air bleed goes at the 12 oclock position.bj

I have the right thermo, I think a flush is the next step. I got a lot of sludge and rust when i drained the coolant to put the new thermo in. I'm going to try back flushing the heater core and then the whole system. I know the electrical cable is good because thereis a noticeable difference between the cold and hot settings on the heater. the hot just isnt hot at all.

Hey err... hope no one minds me using this topic to ask my question, I've been doing some basic maintenence on my truck lately, (replacing bits before winter gets here) and when I got to my thermostat to replace it I found that I didn't have one to replace, I had to guess which way to put it in and I think I might have got it wrong, I put the spring part inside the part that comes off.
Does anyone know if this is wrong?
Also what kinda problems am I likely to encounter if I do have it in the wrong way?
