got a leaky rear

the rear on my truck is leakin. where are the most likely places? bad gasket? also should there be holes on the top of the diff? looks kinda like a coconut but they're real little.

kinda see it here... theres 2 lil ones beside the brake line bracket and looks like 2 below it on the ring bulge. but it seems like the leak i'm gittin is comin from the underside. should them holes be there tho?

Dude I can see those holes! You need a new axle housing! Or you could weld them shut, but I dunno how much clearance there is inside if you get too carried away. ALSO, that larger one might be too big to fill! WOW!

There should not be holes.

I can't see the leak though. But the most common places for leaks are the flange gasket, then the pinion oil seal, then the axle oil seals. The plug on the bottom sometimes leaks as well.

Best bet, dry it off and clean it real well and see where the leak starts.

Well also think about it. If you have holes in the axle housing, the diff. is sloshing around the gear lube and the lube is coming from the holes and gravity is pulling it down. Hence why you think the leak is at the bottom...

Gear oil doesn't really slosh around. Have you ever felt how thick it is? If its getting out of the holes on top, it would probably not be much at all, and would stick to whatever it hit.

Lol, I guess it was an overrated term...

I would say it still would get pn stuff considering how hot it probably gets after driving...
