I'm getting a rear end from a 84 mazda to put into my reg cab 92 mazda.
I heard many different answers when i searched this.
Will my drive shaft bolt up to it?
Will i have to shorten my drive shaft? If so how much?
Do i need to grab the drive shaft from the 84 as well?
any other info will be great.
Thanks

Will it bolt up? No. Different length, different flange.

just curious man but why do you want the rear out of an 84? the driveshafts in the 83s and 84s is a 1 piece shaft unlike the 86-93s that are 2 piece. the shafts in the 83-84s are also shorter i believe. what you would have to do is take the 1 piece shaft and take the yoke off your 92s shaft and put the yoke on the 1 piece and then get it extended.

talk to beau martin on here. he got the rear out of a ranger and only has to extend the shaft by 1" i believe. and it gives him a 5 lug pattern.

The pre 86 Mazda axles are more narrow, and will tuck your 6-lug wheels better with a bodydrop.

The 83-84 ish drive shaft is actually pretty long. The end could be adapted to a stock 2 piece drive shaft though easily. When I did it, I stuck the 84 drive shaft into the transmission (splines are the same), and measured what length it needed to be, and had it shortened to the correct length. Shortening a shaft is less expensive than lengthening it since it doesn't need to be re-tubed.

You can choose to run a 2 piece or 1 piece. Personally I would stick with a 2 piece. I just ran into issues with a 2-piece shaft biding because the truck got 22 inches of lift, but didn't have big wheels, so the drive shaft moved in one direction very far and was binding. The one piece fixed that just due to shear length.

ok, didn't know that. i thought the 1 piece was shorter, but i never had them side by side. in the last statement are you telling him to stick with a 1 piece or 2 piece? said you would stick with a 2 piece but had issues with it binding and fixed it with a 1 piece. i ask because i know a lot of rock climbers use the 2 piece shafts for the length and adjustment. and i am thinking about getting a 2 piece made for my 83.

I recommend the 2-piece. I was just saying that with too much lift, the 2 piece shaft will bind. So it depends on what you are trying to do with the truck. You can get 10-12 inches of travel out of a 2-piece shaft with no problems. But when you try to get close to 2 feet the link bars get to be such an angle that it pulls the axle towards the cab too much.

Any tips on a late 80s toyota rear? I got one, and it's what I will use.
