well i've tried numerous times to sell my mazda and no one wants it so today i was working on the 306 i'm building for my mustang and got to thinking that it would be pretty sweet to pull the injection off slap a carb on and cram it in the mazda, so now my little macgyver light bulb is burning. anyone know who will fab up some narrowed axles pretty cheap and probably a drive shaft anyone who has attempted a small block ford swap give me some help as to some of the problems i will run into. thanks mike
I do know that the Mazda axels are like Ford 9" axels in that they do not have a taper. What that means is the machine shop simply cuts X amount off the inside end of the axel and re splines the remainder. The housing might be a little more difficult.
one of the things i was wondering was if pretty much any machine shop can respline the axles or if you had to order them the length you need them. i think with the tools that i have access to that i could narrow the housing but the axle plines are going to kick me in the nuts. I also think i'm going to backhalf and four link the rear end of the truck and either use a 5 lug chevy or ford rear end. I will have to buy my wheels and slicks first to see how much i going to have to cut out.
well if you narrow you pretty much have to backhalf and 4-link because your rims will scrub the frame. if you arent planning on going that short then you can throw in a pre 84 mazda rear end in there because its like 5 inches narrower and be cutting it really close.

I would think most good machine shops could re-spline the axels. Now for the down side... Mazda axels are very strong, but the carrier is not. These rear ends are great for car dancers on hydros, but not very good for drag racing.
