curious about welders

what size welders is everyone using? what would be the perfect welder for body and frame work?

i made a similar post in the "off topic" section ...

they suggested a lincoin migpak 100 for me... it's a 110 V welder, that can be used for flux core, or can be used for mig, if you buy an attachement kit, ... i'm pickin up mine tomorrow!

but will a 115 volt mig be strong enough to notch the frame, or do you need 220v?

Just take your time and practice on some scrap steel first. get your heat and penetration set right.

i am getting my new millermatic 175 real soon.

apparently the lincoin 100 hd, will weld up to 1/4 " with "ease" ... so enough for anything you would need to do on a mazda

oh, the lincoin 100 hd comes with a vhs .. (i gotta buy a vcr to watch it ... fuckin old technology)... apparently an instructional video on how to weld... which might be handy for a newbie like you and myself

the 100 will weld 1/4 with flux, slowly, and a V groove. you can't do it flat out. that welder is just not strong enough. i wouldn't really bother getting a MIG hook up for that welder unless you plan on using it for bodywork.

with flux core, it will do for a mazda frame. the mazda frame is 3/16th i think, that or 1/8th. it's not really that thick.

i bagged my truck with a lincoln 100. now i use a lincoln 175 220. makes a world of difference. much nicer machine with great MIG capability. if you go to home depot, the price difference is like 150. it's well worth it
