I was told by Line-x it needed to be at least a primered surface, no bare metal

If it is bare metal that u are spraying, i would think it best to lay down a good coat of etching primer first. I dont think bed liner will hold as well without it, and that will take care of the body filler part too.

I sprayed xtreme (like line x) for about 6 years over anything and everything....And never had any issues... plastics were about the only thing that required a promoter or anything to stick....if its metal it will need to be scuffed up or something....But should stick just fine to it. The main problem you will have with bedliner not sticking will be with lack of cleaning the dust out, or if its a polished like smooth surface. As long as its scuffed...it will stick...at least from my experience.

they make a metal filler, use that.

sprayed in bed liners need to go over primered/painted surfaces. I took the line x guys word for it that he could spray over bare metal, and the first time it sat in the sun, my trucks bedliner started bubbling. scrapped it all out, and painted it with base/clear, reshot the line-x and it was good to go.

this is over body filler that was primered with no problems

as far as the rust goes use some rust cure or rust converter to kill the rust then prime it and sandIt will adhear to any painted, primered surface just as long as its sanded well
