shaving door handles: help

i have the plate welded in and smoothed. Can i just lay some evercoat bondo/body filler; sand it smooth and put some high build primer over it?

to add strenth to the "patch" id mix up some kitty-hare first, sand down then do yer bondo-ing over that. less chances of cracking later......
