I'm glad to see this kinda post. Rat rods have almost become a trend. Don't get me wrong, I have a subscription to both CKD and OSR. I don't agree with the shitboxes, but you can find some badass rides in there. It is scary seeing some of the hacked rides that people build just to "fit-in" to a certain crowd. But that will happen with everything. I'm glad the HAMB was mentioned, I've been on that site for sometime now and there are very knowledgeable and respectful people on that site.
Not this argument again.
Rat rods do exist and they are not all unsafe. They are a modern interpretation on what working class people on a budget were building back in the 50's. Traditional hot rods are a period-correct restoration of a Hot Rod from the same era.
So to help you out in your search, Ive been in the market for one myself and look on ebay every couple days and they always have some bad ass ones so check them out.
whatever you do, build a roadtser with cowl shift mmmm.
they are right.....rat rods are shitboxes with no style. traditional hot rods are bad ass REAL hot rods. none of that gold chainer shit. look on the hamb for inspiration and good deals. just dont run a SBC in anything other than a cheby, and do NOT run billet crap!

they're aren't "rat rods", they're hot rods. stay away from Ol Skool Rodz magazine for inspiration since that magazine caters to sh!tboxes and junk. pick up Rodders Journal, Rod & Kulture to name a couple of good resources.
here are a few examples of hot rods...
sorry, i'll give you my definition (or at least what i'm looking for).
hot rod=completely done, painted, may or may not have uncovered engine, may or may not be roadster, average $30,000
rat rod=unfinished, probably running, flat or no paint, unfinished interior, dude was going for building a hot rod and ran out of time/money/motivation, average $9,000
by rat i meant flat, uncovered engine, etc, just not completely finished cause i don't have the financing available of 50 year old dudes that do nothing else but buy hot rods. I wanted something that's running, at least safe to drive, but maybe interior is rough. most body work and metal work done, may need some fine tuning and finishing. She really liked the look of the 32 plymouth, but i think any early to mid 30's ride will work: dodge, ford, or chevy.
