just finished a cheap static drop last weekend (spindles, 1/2 coil off of front spring, pulled overload and 2 springs, shackles in rear) and dropped it off down at the alignment shop. That afternoon, the shop calls me and says it wouldnt start, so I figured it was the usual temperamental hot start issues that the 7.4 suffers from. I tell them it should start fine the next morning and they then call me the next morning and same thing. I go down there and could get it to start either and finally had it towed back home.
I got to replace the fuel pump today, again since I replaced it within the last year already. Couldnt find the receipt, so its another 300 bucks for another damn pump.
Of course, my buddies are now saying "go ahead and notch it and body drop the bed while its off" ... just not gonna happen right now, but I knew they were gonna say that.
Anyone else have issues with their pumps?
Thats seems a short life span for a fuel pump....your not running around "low" on fuel all the time?
Pump need fuel for cooling.....My AC is leaking oil again after 9 months...belly leakers I think they are know as....3rd one in two years...
Well, its not the fuel pump. I have traced the issue down to the oil pressure sending unit. If the oil pressure sending unit is bad (or reading low pressure) it cuts the power to the pump to keep the engine from grenading. I remember this from years ago, but my dash gauge was showing pressure so I dismissed this as a possibility. After a few more systematic checks, it turned out to be the sender.
I just got done static dropping my truck 6 months ago and had the same problem of it not starting and found that there is a purple wire that runs behind passenger side of the block that could have melted and got grounded for some reason. So I moved it out of the way and fixed it up. Then down the road I had problems with my fuel pump and after replacing the pump and a couple of sensors, come to find out it was a simple fuel filter. hope this helps you with your problem.
Thanks, its not the filter. If you pull the relay out while the truck is running the truck will die ... its not supposed to. The relay only gets it started, then the signal from the oil pressure switch/sender keeps it going. I will be putting in the new sensor today.
Of course, as I drove back up into the driveway yesterday she started pissing herself ... time for a new water pump too.
