looking to buy a dually
Hi, new to the site, but been lurking for a while now, i'm looking to buy a truck that is down the road from my parents place.
Its a 1991 chevy reg cab dually, however the catch is that it had a flatbed on it before and looking at it i'm not sure if i can put a proper bed on it (judging by the wheel base) i measured it quickly the other night and it comes out to 14' center wheel to center wheel.
hopefully that pic works, basically i'm looking for options on what i can and can't do with the truck, if i'd have to shorten the frame in order to fit a longbox (or shortbox) on it or if a longbox will fit on it!
thanks!
you will definatly have to shorten the chassis for a long bed to fit. but if you plan on laying it out in the future, it already has the narrowed rear end! later, brian
What Brian said, yeah, from a glance that looks like an 84" cab-to-axle cab & chassis, it's the "long" version while a 60" is the "short." When you compare it to say, a regular cab long bed dually, your wheelbase is going to be 28" longer. A 60" cab-to-axle cab & chassis is only 4" more wheelbase than a regular cab long bed dually. Either one of them you would need to shorten the frame to fit a regular bed on it, also you'll need to fab some bed mounts. These frames were never made with the intention to mount a pickup bed, they were strictly made for upfitting. Flatbeds, utility beds, wrecker units, box trucks, etc. so the frame rails are 34" and ladder straight, no taper.
Hard numbers - 84" cab-to-axle C&C (what it looks like you have there) wheelbase is 159.5". A 60" cab-to-axle C&C wheelbase is 135.5". A non-C&C regular cab long bed is 131.5" so hopefully all that helps.
And as Brian said the C&C rear end is narrower than a regular dually, by about 8". So if you were just trying to throw an unmodified dually bed on there it would hit the wheel tubs on the inside duals. If you're going to lay it out you're cutting the tubs and a section of floor out anyway so it doesn't matter.
OR...don't shorten the frame! Get two beds and lengthen the front of the bed 28"...it would look freaking killer. Pretty sure it has been done before but not by more than a handful of people, so it would definitely be different, pretty sick, and would trip people out.

why not buy it and mold two beds together to make a super bed dually??! insted of shorting the frame make the bed longer!!!!! i think that would be hot to see. like a ten foot bed!
^^^ that would be cool.... the longer the dually the cooler.. and of course harder to drive LOL
I have a 94 chevy cc dually 4 sale already bagged new moser axles and custom cut 22s for sale for 5k. My number is 1-318-512-5784 Peyton
^ love to buy it but unfortunately getting a bagged dually to pass federal and provincial inspection north of the 49th parallel is a pain!
i've decided to pass on this truck, the more and more i think about it i ideally want a crew cab!
thinking about looking for a 73-88!
