using relays on a compressor is dumb. use a solenoid that can handle the amperage of BOTH compressors. i have a 100 amp ambulance one on mine(got it at advanced auto) and i havnt ever had a prob out of it in 5 years. the contacts in a relay are to small for the amperage that is pulled for a compressor.

the hissing might have came from the line to the lower right of where the wires burnt up. you can tell from the pic that the protective (foam?) wrap is burnt from the heat and it looks like the actual line is damaged too.

The fluid is probably the lubricant that was in the AC line.

I second the use of a solenoid, i burnt through numerous relays before finally getting it right.

I've always used relays on compressors. Use one 30/40 amp for each compressor you have and wire them into the ground side of the compressor. The 380s only pull 16 amps so you'll be fine.
